Cancer Drug Avastin Increases Risk of Blood Clots When Taken with Chemotherapy

Recent research at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center has revealed that Avastin, the cancer drug, increases the risk of blood clots in the veins by some 33% when it is taken together with chemotherapy.

The study was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association and looked at 15 previous clinical trials involving a total of nearly 8,000 persons. It found that Avastin, which is marketed by Roche and Genentech, increased the risk of blood clots from about 10% to about 13%.

Dr Shenhong Wu, leader of the study, said that this is “a significant increased risk with Avastin for patients while they are taking chemotherapy”.
